Writer’s Guidelines

College Union exists to provide support, training, and networking for campus ministry leaders within the United Methodist Church in order to encourage evangelism, discipleship, and leadership development within the Wesleyan tradition, reaching college and university students for Christ.Audience: You are writing to people who minister to college students (Wesley Foundation directors and staff, chaplains, local church based college ministers). Your article should focus on helping campus/college ministers more effectively minister to students in the name of Christ.Style: We’re looking for a style that is personal, conversational, biblical, and practical.

  • Use action verbs. Whenever possible choose a verb that adds punch, force, and color to the sentence. Use concrete and specific language to get the reader involved. Avoid forms of the verb “to be”-is, was, were, etc.
  • Use anecdotes to carefully and colorfully illustrate each point.
  • Use short sentences whenever possible. Obviously a variety of length makes for good writing but long sentences are cumbersome and often difficult to understand.
  • Use long words only when necessary. Avoid trying to sound intellectual.

Please proofread before submitting-and then proofread again. While College Union will edit your article, the more proofreading for grammar, style, and spelling errors you do will make our job a lot easier.

Word count: Approx. 750-1500 Words
