Alpha on Campus

The Alpha approach to ministry connects with this generation of college students.  Barna research has shown that 50% of Alpha attendees make a commitment to Christ (first time or recommitments).  At an Alpha course, young people explore the Christian faith in a relaxed setting over a meal for ten thought-provoking weekly sessions and a retreat-like day or weekend away.  It is low-key, friendly and fun – and allows for open discussion and dialogue.  In this safe and community-driven environment many young people are finding Christ.

“Alpha is such a great format for building community,” says Allison Worley an intern for the Wesley @ the University of Texas, Austin campus.   “It is a very thorough teaching on the basic principles of Christianity.”

Ian Schumann went through the course the spring of 2007.  Although Ian was Jewish and a confessed atheist, he decided to attend the Alpha course put on by the Wesley Foundation because his Jewish roommate had started attending and he wanted to “know more about this Christ guy.”  “The talks seemed long,” said Ian, “but the discussion in small groups afterwards were great and hearing the other people in my group got me to thinking.  On the retreat weekend, the 2nd night, God began tugging at my heart and I gave my life to Christ.”  His roommate shortly after attending the Alpha course also gave his life to Christ.

That summer Ian applied to a Christian camp to be a counselor and lead Bible studies for the kids.  In the spring of ’08, Ian served as an intern for the Wesley Foundation and this summer applied to go on a year long missions trip with Adventures in Missions called the World Race – 11 months in 11 countries.  “My life has been turned upside down,” said Ian.
