Surviving Racism

August 31st, 2006

When Reality T.V. Reflects Real Life

Just when you think that the Survivor couldn’t come up with any new tricks, they throw a whammy on the American public that has everyone either up in arms or running for cover. For the first time ever, Survivor will divide 20 castaways into four teams along racial lines. Combine this with Crash winning the Oscar for best picture, the moronic comments from Virginia’s George Allen and the pointed take that John Stewart & The Daily Show took in condemning “lazy racism”- it looks like we are going to have to address this issue within our campus ministries. If someone is already thinking about how the Gospel can speak into this national wound – we need to hear from you in the discussion groups.

What concerns me the most is that the past wounds and injustices of racism are as present in the church today as they are in our larger society. If healing is going to come, it has to come through Christ and His Church. The problem is compounded by the fact that we still need to heal ourselves. Jesus, have mercy on us.

I’ve pulled out some of the better articles for you to interact with – including one about GM pulling their sponsorship of the show. I have also included a link to Allen’s remarks and the Daily Show segment from youtube.com.
